About


The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee Inc. is a community-wide committee formed to enact Dr. King’s vision for unity. The committee’s primary focus is to impact the lives of future college students who embody Dr. King’s work. Each year the committee selects King Scholars from a pool of local high school seniors and awards them with a $1,000 “Living the Dream” scholarship to use at a college of their choice. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Recipients


Every year 10 -12 high school seniors from Champaign County receive this scholarship. The recipients are chosen based on their scholarship application, financial need, and a personal essay explaining their commitment to living the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.


The scholarship recipients attend colleges and universities across the country. Past recipients have attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Tugaloo College, University of Arkansas, Georgia State University, Illinois Wesleyan, Clark Atlanta University, Millikin University, Michigan State University, DePauw University, University of Missouri, and many other accredited institutions.


The MLK Jr. Living the Dream scholarships are funded through tax-deductible donations from individuals, churches, synagogues, and businesses who share our passion for transforming the lives of young people through education.

  • How can I apply for the scholarship?

    Prospective applicants to the Dr. King Jr. “Living the Dream” scholarship must be graduating high school seniors from the Champaign, Rantoul, or Urbana; complete an essay demonstrating their commitment to Dr. King’s legacy, and show financial need. Applications will be at each local high school’s guidance office.

  • Can I apply to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advocacy for Justice Committee, Inc scholarship fund if I plan to attend a university outside of Urbana-Champaign?

    Yes, recipients of our scholarship attend colleges and universities across the country, including MIT, Spellman College, Howard University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.


    However, applicants must be local high school students from Champaign, Rantoul, or Urbana. 

  • How are recipients of the scholarship decided?

    Our scholarship committee selects recipients based on their academics, financial need, and an essay demonstrating their commitment to Dr. King’s dream.

    The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Scholarship is an Urbana-Champaign College Scholarship fund dedicated to providing opportunities for future college students who embody Dr. King's vision of unity.  Each year 6-12 King local high school seniors are awarded Dr. King's Living the Dream, an Urbana-Champaign College Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 a year for up to 4 years to use at a college of their choice. Our organization prides itself on uplifting students in our community through our Living the Dream Scholarship, an Urbana-Champaign College Scholarship fund.
